The Impact of Addiction
The impact of addiction is everywhere. Look around in any business meeting and at least one person in the room is hiding a secret life of alcohol and/or substance abuse. Sadly, according to the 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 19.4 million adults (over the age of 18) are dependent on alcohol or drugs.
What is the price for the rising number of alcohol and substance abuses in the U.S.?
- Addiction is costing companies greater than $180 billion a year in absenteeism, injuries, workers compensation and medical claims, reduced productivity and public safety. (SAMHSA, 2004)
- Hospitals report nearly 2 million drug-related Emergency Room visits with approximately 1.3 million of those visits associated with drug misuse or abuse including alcohol. (SAMHSA, 2004)
- An estimated 30.7 million persons aged 21 or older (16.6% of adult drivers) admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs during the past year; of these, 1.2 million (0.6% of adult drivers) were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs during the past year. (SAMSHA, 2004)
This all adds up to a staggering amount of time, money and resources. The issue remains cloaked in secrecy and stigma due to a lack of education and public awareness concerning addiction and recovery. The result being that only a small percentage of those struggling with addiction ever seek treatment unless mandated by family, employers or the legal system.
