Now that summer is just around the corner, it is time for recreation, outdoor activities, socializing and fun. But for someone who is in recovery, the summer months can provide a substantial trigger for a relapse. Summer gatherings such as festivals, the beach, outdoor BBQ’s and parties can all be places filled with temptations. Although being sober during summer can create some challenges that one in recovery must overcome, it is possible to still have a fun, exciting and sober summertime!
Why not do something meaningful this summer and donate your time to volunteering? Not only will you contribute to society in a positive way, but it will also help in your recovery process as well. Those who are of service to others have a far greater chance at long-term sobriety. There are many causes such as animals, children & youth, education, environment and more, that are sure to interest you. Volunteering will also help you to meet like-minded people and expand your social-circle. A great website to check out for volunteer opportunities is volunteermatch.org.
Spend Time in Nature
There are many powerful mental, emotional and physical health benefits of spending time outside in nature. Nature has a positive, healing effect on someone who is in recovery and can help increase a person’s chances of staying sober. Studies have shown that going for walks regularly outside can reduce feelings of stress, anger, anxiety and even depression. Sober summertime fun should include common summer activities such as, going for a walk, hiking, or camping. Staying in touch with nature will make you feel better, and when you feel better you strengthen your sobriety.
Learn Something New
Since many of us have extra leisure time during the summer, it is an ideal time to learn something new. You could learn to play a new instrument, learn another language, take a class at a community college, or learn a new trade such as sewing or carpentry. Research has shown that people who struggle with addiction and make a conscious effort to learn something new can change their brains, overall outlook on life and remain sober. So why not take advantage of the longer days this summer and learn something new that can be both fun and beneficial to your well-being?
Travel & Explore
If possible, take a dream trip this summer to a place that you have always wanted to visit, or just pack up and go somewhere without a certain destination in mind! If a big vacation to another state or country seems out of reach, why not explore your city or state as a tourist? You could make a citywide or regional itinerary and go out and do all the touristy things that you have never done before. You will be surprised by how much you can discover. You see, sober summertime fun can be exciting! Even if you do not have anyone to go traveling with this summer, traveling alone can be just as rewarding. Get out there and discover, the possibilities are endless!
